Random likes and dislikes

I am really liking these Temple St. Clair rings from Target:

Especially the emerald and red ones. I am always a sucker for red anyhow.

On the flip side, I am supremely unhappy with Emily Deschanel’s bangs. She looks so frumpy, when she is actually so fabulous. Seriously. They hide her gorgeous eyes!! And make her look… blah. I don’t even know how to describe it. I’m not sure how I’m going to watch this season of Bones with that haircut.

Wedding dresses, round 2

August 28th, 2010. Filed under Dresses, Wedding.

Two weekends ago, Kim, my future sister in law, invited me to New York City to try on some wedding dresses. This trip was spontaneous and just for fun; I have my “real” wedding dress tryouts in September. They will include my mom (can’t make a decision without her obviously), possibly my dad but he may decide to roam NYC for photo opportunities instead, my aunt, my cousin, Kim, and one of my bridesmaids. We actually have an appointment at Kleinfeld Bridal, which is bound to be entertaining. My family made an entire weekend out of it, which will be fun. I’m actually not a fan of NYC at all… I’ve never liked it very much, so I don’t go very often. Although, I really did enjoy the weekend with Kim. It helped that the weather was perfect for walking around.

Cut again because Ed is not allowed to see!

Operation: Organize & Conquer

August 26th, 2010. Filed under Lifestyle.

The irresistible urge to clean and organize often hits me at the most inopportune times. For example, the first week at my new job. Two weeks ago I ordered a bunch of closet organizing supplies: a scarf hanger, a belt hanger, skirt hangers, drawer dividers, a purse rack, an over-the-door shoe rack, closet dividers, and wood hangers. They all arrived last week, so I immediately had to put them to use, organizing until the wee hours of the morning. And then once I got started I couldn’t stop, so I ended up organizing the entire condo. Needless to say I was doubly exhausted, but my restless nerves kept me chugging through it all. Oh, and then Friday night I slept for sixteen hours. That helped.

I’ve mentioned before that since we live in a single bedroom condo, we have to be creative with our limited storage space. Well, the hall closet had gotten to the point that I hesitated to open it for fear of an avalanche of stuff falling on my head. I also realized to my dismay that we still had empty boxes of appliances we didn’t even have anymore… like my old printer, which I donated to Goodwill several months ago, and the blender with the dead motor which I threw out. All of that prime storage space, wasted! Furthermore, Ed and I have always used the wire hangers from the dry cleaner in our closet. Ew, right? My goal was to replace all of our wire hangers with wooden ones. At the same time, I categorized all of my clothes with the closet dividers for easier searching. I ended up freeing a lot of space, and I put a bunch of stuff in storage at my parents’ house.

This has been a big transitional period for me. I’ve been a student my entire life but now I’m working, plus Ed and I are getting married, so we have been rearranging our finances. I’m kind of glad I went through this “fall cleaning” of sorts. Organizing my closet and the condo, putting unused things into storage, going through and filing away important documents (and throwing out the unimportant ones), and getting all of our finances in order, felt very cathartic. I wanted to do when I was studying for the bar exam last month but I didn’t have the time. I feel like I’m starting on my new career with a blank slate!

Daily outfit: fresh lime

August 18th, 2010. Filed under Outfits, Style.

I didn’t realize it until just now as I was writing this blog post, but every single item in this outfit is from LOFT. I’ve had the skirt for a few years now, but I believe the top, shoes, and belt are from this past spring/summer seasons. I really do love this understated lime green color.

Work is going well. It’s definitely encouraging that I am liking it more and more each day. I want to be excited about the work that I do. I know I wrote yesterday that I will “post more about it later,” but I’m going to have to put it off again today! On the other hand, I hit a roadblock tonight in my closet organization efforts. That’s another post that I hope to write before next week.

Daily outfit: first day on the job

August 17th, 2010. Filed under Outfits, Style, Work.

  • Necklace: Forever 21
  • Pants: Banana Republic (Martin fit)
  • Shoes: LOFT
  • Top: Twenty One

I started my new job yesterday. I am career woman, hear me roar! I apologize for not posting more often. I actually have many topics in mind to write about, but adjusting to my new schedule (plus a sudden frantic craving to clean and organize the entire condo, including every storage bin… don’t ask, I will post about it soon enough) has left me with a lack of free time to do much else.

I realized just these past two days that I really need to plan my outfits the night before. I planned this outfit (and my kick ass pink outfit) the night before, and look how they turned out. On the other hand, last night I didn’t have any time to pick an outfit, so this morning I tore through my closet only to decide that I didn’t like what I put on the first time around, so I changed everything including jewelry five minutes before I had to leave. I’d prefer not to do that again.

I’ve always thought of this top as a “going out” top. You can’t see it in the photo, but it has faint, glittery diagonal stripes. It’s loose around the sleeves and bust area, then it comes in down the waist, so it’s quite flattering. It worked very well with these work-appropriate pants, adding just the right amount of sparkle.

So, along with planning my outfits the night in advance, I’m trying to start my job on the right foot in other ways. I’m hoping to pack lunch every day, and not just lame Lean Cuisine lunches either because I’m lazy. I’m hoping to prepare my lunches the night before. Lunch is always my least inspired meal. I actually don’t like sandwiches (who doesn’t like sandwiches, right? Of course, I also hate chocolate, so clearly there is something wrong with me) because restaurants usually fill them with too much meat (as Mitch Hedberg would say, “it’s like a cow with a cracker on either side”) and they always fall apart on me. I’m also probably the slowest eater you will ever encounter, and I will sit at a table for an hour just picking at whatever is in front of me until I eventually consume it bit by bit. As long as something is there… I will keep poking. But poking and taking sandwiches apart kind of defeats the purpose of sandwiches. Anyway, that was a really long tangent with too many parentheses. Other types of restaurant food feel too heavy for lunchtime, so basically the one option left is salad. Which is fine, but I can make my own salad better and for cheaper at home. I have always been a breakfast eater, so I have to wake up early enough for that as well.

I also hope to continue making dinner at least four nights per week, taking Sophie on her walk every night, and I’ve changed my kickboxing schedule. So… yeah. We’ll see how much of this I will actually pull off.

Daily outfit: pink pink and pink

August 11th, 2010. Filed under Outfits, Style.

  • Belt: J. Crew
  • Cardigan: J. Crew
  • Heels: Modcloth
  • Skirt: J. Crew
  • Top: Banana Republic

I am immensely proud of myself for this outfit. I think this may be my favorite outfit I’ve posted on this blog so far. I love the combination of brown and pink, and I think I pulled off the varying shades of pink well. The belt and shoes even match in the same shade! Clearly, I am awesome.

There is only one thing missing in this outfit, and that is… toenail polish. I am a big fan of painted toenails with peep-toe shoes. Normally my toenails are painted all year round, usually red, but a dark color either way. It had been a while since I’d done my nails and the color was chipping, so I removed the polish last week. I neglected to paint them again, so there they are… bare.

There have been many big developments in my life this week! Most of them are related to employment. Everything isn’t quite 100% settled, so that is all I will disclose for now. But, I’m excited and hopeful! I slept at most two hours last night in between anxiously staring off into space and having bizarre dreams, oh, and Sophie deciding to wake me up at the crack of dawn.

Daily outfit: summer wedges

August 9th, 2010. Filed under Outfits, Style.

  • Tunic: Urban Outfitters
  • Wedges: Nine West via Piperlime

Okay. I think I’m getting back in the swing of things. I spent most of last week completely spacing out, and I’m beginning to feel normal again. I finished watching all of the Bones episodes I hadn’t seen before, and I don’t have any more left to watch. Sad face. I even watched a bit of the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I had never seen it before, and it was available for instant play on Netflix, so why not? (While we’re on this topic, I hope the harassment suit filed against David Boreanaz turns out to not be true because he’s so cute as Booth and I won’t be able to feel the same affection towards him otherwise. My feelings were summed up very well by the fug girls here. I didn’t like him so much as Angel though, too stiff and angsty, but that’s really off topic at this point.)

I hope to post more about wedding planning now that The Exam That Shall Not Be Named is over. Depending on your point of view, I suppose you could either enjoy such posts or they may cause you to unfollow me bitterly. That’s okay though, I get it. I am currently designing a wedding website. At first Ed hated the idea of a wedding website because he’s allergic to all things sentimental, but we compromised when I told him I would create the website from scratch exactly as we want, instead of through a wedding website service. Which means, NO SENTIMENTAL MUSH. Wedding planning is serious business around here.

Daily outfit: favorite red dress

August 3rd, 2010. Filed under Outfits, Style.

  • Dress: INC International Concepts
  • Necklace: Eco Retro Bling
  • Shoes: Marc Fisher
  • Tank: GAP

This is my absolute favorite dress right now. It’s even better because it’s red. It’s super comfortable (a soft jersey fabric, with extra lining on the inside) and flattering. I can’t believe I found it for only about $30 at Macy’s! There are several other colors/patterns, but they were sold out, unsurprisingly. It can also be worn without a tank top underneath, although it’s slightly low cut.

In other news, the bar exam is long gone, except last night I had a dream where I was taking both the NJ and PA afternoon sessions at the same time, and I completely blanked on all of the answers. That was unsettling. So far I’ve spent most of my time watching Bones episodes. I’m trying to finish watching every episode from the first five seasons before season 6 begins in September. I only got into the show recently so I’ve had to do some catch-up. I also have a massive girl crush on Dr. Brennan, but that’s another post for another day. I don’t know if this is typical for most bar-takers, but I feel totally checked out right now. I think I’m going to continue spacing out for the next couple of days.

Life after the bar

July 26th, 2010. Filed under Lifestyle, School.

For the past three years I’ve kept a mental list of things I would like to do after law school. I graduated law school, and then something even worse reared its ugly head: the bar exam. So “after law school” became “after the bar exam.” I’m really hoping I won’t have to rename that list a third time.

In light of the fact that the bar exam is tomorrow (and the day after… and the day after that… 3 days of fun!) I thought it would be appropriate to post my finalized version of Things I Would Like to do After Law School the Bar Exam.

  1. I would say, “abuse an absurd amount of alcohol,” (alliteration ZING!) but I will most likely get out of the final segment of the bar exam Thursday afternoon, go home, have a bottle of Yuengling, and pass the F out.
  2. Sleep for a very long time. Then take a nap.
  3. Go to the beach. I’m in the best shape of my life, and I haven’t been to the beach, or a pool, a single time so far this summer. I have four bikinis that I actually feel confident in and want to wear! How often does this happen??? I mean, I hope I will always feel confident in my bikini bod, but I’m not taking any chances. They must be worn immediately!!
  4. Start going to kickboxing again, and start Zumba!
  5. Read novels. I have a stack of things to read on my bedside table that have sat there for a very long time. Included on that list is The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, technically the last bit of Love in the Time of Cholera (which I started reading a year ago but never finished, but it doesn’t really matter because I’ve read it at least five times so I might as well just start it over again), One Hundred Years of Solitude (because it’s been too long since I’ve read it last), The Art of Seduction (this was recommended to me by someone else; it’s a little strange but I might as well finish it), and plenty of meaningless fluffy magazines.
  6. Speaking of LOTR, do another extended edition movie marathon.
  7. Work on all of my neglected websites.
  8. Keep in better touch with friends, and comment a whole lot more on other blogs. Brace yourselves, all ye bloggers.
  9. Go grocery shopping so that we actually have food at home because I’m sick of eating takeout, chocolate chip cookies, sour gummy worms, Diet Coke and Cocoa Pebbles. Also, resume my cooking adventures. I’ve bookmarked about two hundred recipes to enter into my MacGourmet library.
  10. Fix the “search” box on the sidebar —> because I just tried using it to find that MacGourmet post and it does not work. Y’all don’t tell me anything.
  11. Finish any Bones episodes that I have not yet seen, before Season 6 begins. I might as well catch up on all sorts of other shows that everyone raves about that I’ve never seen before (True Blood, Mad Men).

That’s all I can think of for now. Here’s to not being a student for the first time in my adult life! It’s going to feel weird not having exams in December and May.
